What is Derby Days?

Nationally, Derby Days is Sigma Chi’s largest philanthropy event. Each brother wears a traditional derby hat for the week, thus giving derby days its name. Now for the fun part; the girls chase around the guys during the week and try to steal their derbies. The hilarity that ensues makes this week one of our favorite events. Ask anyone who has participated in derby days, and they’ll tell you how much fun it is.  A long honored tradition at Sigma Chi, this weeklong party is a great chance to meet the brothers of the sigma chi fraternity.

Traditionally teams of 8-12 girls enter, and then are assigned 2 brothers as their team captains. Simply stealing derbies is not the only objective of the week. Each team is competing against each other for the coveted derby days title. There are nightly events usually lasting around 2 hours. Winners of these events as well as other tasks then receive points. The first place team is then presented with a trophy and special favoritism from the fraternity.

During all of this fun we also raise a lot of money for a charity: The Children’s Miracle Network. Last year we raised $6,000 for the children’s miracle network. This year we would like to beat that number. There will also be a special presentation ceremony for this money held in October/November that all derby days’ participants would be invited too.

Our main source for these donations comes from the derby day’s participants. At our bachelor auction girls bid on our brothers using their own personal money, or money that their group raised. Fundraising is an event that goes on all week, booths will be provided in Wilson commons for flex donations, empty can collection, ETC. This money can be used during the bachelor auction or just a straight donation to the charity fund. Aside from the $15 entry fee, ALL OTHER PROCEEDS will go directly to the children’s miracle network.

Be a part of something that you’ll talk about for years to come! The brothers are looking forward to being chased down for their derbies!
